Dr. Joseph Falvey is Associate Director of Bands and Director of Athletic Bands at Utah State University, where he also serves as horn professor. Prior to his appointment at USU, he taught horn and directed the athletic bands at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, VA. He earned his doctoral degree in horn performance from the University of Miami. While studying at Miami, he was a member of the Mancini Institute Orchestra as well serving as a teaching assistant in the horn studio and musicology department. Dr. Falvey earned his master’s in horn performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and his bachelor’s in music education from Eastern Michigan University.

Dr. Falvey is currently a member of the Utah Festival Opera and the American Festival Orchestra. Past orchestral positions include third horn with the Symphony of the Americas in Florida, principal horn with the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra in China, and third horn with the Sinaloa Symphony Orchestra in Mexico. He has been active as a freelance artist, performing with the Norwegian National Opera, Florida Grand Opera New World Symphony, and Sarasota Orchestra, among others. He has performed as a soloist or chamber musician at the Western Horn Workshop, Southeast Horn Workshop, SCI Region III Conference, and International Horn Symposium 37. His principal teachers include Randy Gardner, Willard Zirk, David Thompson, JD Shaw, and Richard Todd.

Dr. Falvey has a rich history in the marching arts as an instructor, drill designer, and performer. He was a member of the Blue Devils from Concord, CA from 2000 to 2002. During his tenure with the Blue Devils, he won the best marcher award in 2001, served as section leader in 2002, and was inducted into the Blue Devils Hall of Fame the same year. From 1995 to 1999, Dr. Falvey was a member of the Glassmen from Toledo, OH. He was a section leader and soloist in 1998 and 1999.

In addition to writing the drill for all Aggie Marching Band performances, Dr. Falvey is currently the drill writer for Michigan high schools in Marysville and Almont. He has also written drill for the University of Miami Band of the Hour and Hazel Park High School in Michigan.
